Required Reading: A Group Is Its Own Worst Enemy

All I've got so far are Cory Doctorow's notes, but Clay Shirkey's Talk at the Emerging Technology Conference was apparently so chock full of goodies that even the notes are infodense.

The basic theme is the need for social structure that works in concert with social software. It's not enough to provide the communications infrastructure for groups-- you also have to provide a constitution, or rules of order, or something. Enforced by the software, perhaps, but subject to the will of the community.

He also talks about the importance of enabling core users, and awarding them additional respect relative to casual users.
